About Iowa Organic Farms, LLC, is a small company in a small town, but we have a big heart and some big ideas. We are driven by a few things that are important to us:
Specific Drivers: A concern about the industrialization of global agriculture and the effects on our environment and our health In the years since World War II, American agriculture has undergone a significant change from manual, organic processes to automated, bio-engineered ones. Just as the Industrial Revolution drove (and still drives) automation and process 'efficiencies' to maximize output to achieve the lowest possible cost per unit, this Agricultural Revolution seeks to 'improve' upon nature to maximize crop yields by engineering plants that resist pests and chemicals and produce ever more bushels per acre. We are pushing nature beyond what is 'natural' and we have no concept (and sometimes no concern) for the possible costs to our ecosystem and our personal health. This is what has become the 'American Way' of more, better, faster, cheaper and this mentality has been exported around the world. It is not economically possible for the FDA (or other governmental agencies) to test every aspect of every genetic modification, or for the USDA to test every side-effect of every chemical. They do what they can and test for what they feel is most critical (and what they can afford), but their ultimate actions may not be in the best interest of the individuals, since their existence (and sometimes their funding) is dependent upon the producers seeking approval of the subjects being tested. It is only after release of these items to the world (and the passage of time) that the impacts will be understood. In the short term, our economies are improved and growth is achieved, so the powers that be are pleased today. God only knows the long-term costs that will be borne by our descendants to come. This concern is driving us to treat nature as we once did. Our methods minimize chemical usage and rely more on the tried-and-true methods of hard labor and work (over the convenience of genetic modifications that do the work for us). A desire to make a difference on a local level, person-to-person We realize we can't change the world by ourselves, so we're going to do it on a level that we can. We strive to educate our local community about natural and organic methods and provide them with natural and organic products to show them that it can be done. A love of pure and simple nature Nature is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us. If we can get by without destroying its purity and simplicity for our own selfish gains of the current moment, shouldn't we try? |
